Avanzando Co-Occurring Enhanced (COE) is a women’s residential substance use treatment program at Gándara Center in Ludlow, MA, that provides a supportive, structured, and culturally responsive environment for women working toward recovery. The program also supports pregnant and postpartum individuals, which allows the team to address recovery alongside the unique needs that can come with pregnancy, parenting, family relationships, and preparing for life after residential treatment.
Staff help participants identify with community resources they can continue with after discharge, including outpatient treatment, recovery supports, employment and education, family services, and other community-based programs. The goal is not simply to help someone do well while they are in residential treatment, but to help them build a network of supports that can continue after they leave.
The program is fortunate to have a dedicated team led by Program Director Winnie Wanambisi. Winnie brings a strong commitment to participant care and staff development, and works to create a culture that balances compassion, accountability, structure, and respect. Her leadership encourages staff to look beyond a person's immediate circumstances and focus on strengths, possibilities, and long-term stability.
One of the things that makes Avanzando unique is its energy and sense of community. During Spirit Week, staff and participants come together for themed activities, celebrations, and opportunities to have fun and connect. This week generates excitement throughout the program, builds relationships, increases morale, and gives participants something positive to look forward to.
