Course Description: The Medication Specialist Training for Supervisors prepares individuals in administrative or leadership positions to oversee the supervision and continued professional development of Medication Specialists and direct care staff who handle resident and patient medications.  This course introduces participants to the principles of medication management and provides guidance to improve the overall medication safety of residential and congregate care programs licensed and/or contracted by BSAS.   

Learning Objectives :

By the end of this training, participants should be able to:

  • Define medication management and describe the duties, roles, and responsibilities of the Supervisor, Medication Specialist, and direct care staff
  • Implement medication management policies and procedures as described in the Medication Management Plan
  • Create a cross-training plan to ensure around-the-clock coverage of medication management duties
  • Evaluate your program’s medication readiness
  • Develop a performance evaluation to measure staff performance with regard to medication management
  • Respond to medication non-adherence and improper use   
  • Report and resolve medication events and errors

Target Audience: Program Directors, Clinical Supervisors, and Managers who will be supervising the Medication Specialist and/or are responsible for staff who handle resident and patient medications.
