Description:

This advanced training is designed for supervisors in the field of substance addiction prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery who have already completed foundational diversity, equity, inclusion & accessibility (DEIA) training. With attention to the CLAS Standards for workforce development, participants will explore ethical considerations and effective practices for supervising staff with social identities different from one’s own. Topics include:

  • Addressing the impact of the current climate on staff of targeted social identities

  • Balancing unconditional positive regard for clients with addressing racism and other forms of bias from clients and the impact on staff

  • Keeping CLAS Standards on the agenda

  • Centering CLAS Standards in employee performance evaluations

  • Setting staff up for success with CLAS skills

  • Retention and promotion to meet CLAS Standards

  • Ethical leadership and pitfalls to avoid

  • Cultural humility in supervision

  • Accountability and inclusive decision making

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this training, participants should be able to:

  • Identify at least 3 strategies for centering CLAS Standards in performance evaluations

  • Identify at least 3 strategies for keeping CLAS Standards on the meeting agenda

  • Identify at least 3 strategies for bolstering employee CLAS skills

  • Identify at least 3 strategies for boosting retention and supporting promotion of staff of culturally and linguistically diverse social identities

  • Identify at least 3 practices for supporting staff who’ve experienced bias from clients

  • Identify at least 3 practices for engaging in cultural humility with staff

  • Identify at least 3 practices for maintaining accountability and engaging in inclusive decision making
