The Institute for Health and Recovery (IHR) will be leading a series of regional trainings. These trainings are open to DPH, Bureau of Substance Addiction providers as well as other youth serving agencies and departments.

This training is aimed at mid- to advanced level experienced clinicians, as well as experienced direct care staff, to learn about the evidenced-based, therapeutic curriculum created by Lisa Najavits called “Seeking Safety”. It is essential for participants to attend the all-day “Seeking Safety” training before implementing it within their milieu!
“Seeking Safety” is an evidenced-based, present-focused counseling model to help people attain safety from trauma and/or substance abuse. It can be conducted in either a group (any size) and/or individual modality. It is an extremely safe model as it directly addresses both trauma and addiction, but without requiring clients to del ve into the trauma narrative (the detailed account of disturbing trauma memories), thus making it relevant to a very broad range of clients and easy to implement. It has also been delivered successfully by peers in addition to professionals of all kinds and in all settings. It can be conducted over any number of sessions available although the more the better when possible. Seeking Safety was begun in 1992 under grant funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). It was developed by Lisa M. Najavits, Ph. D at Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital. It has been used in many countries and has been translated into over 8 languages.
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to
- Orientate participants about the “Seeking Safety” curriculum and how it is a proven and accessible intervention that addresses both trauma and substance use concerns
- Attendees will learn how to appropriately facilitate the “Seeking Safety” curriculum in a structured manner to enhance safety, connectivity and relatable skill-building.
- Provide training and technical assistance to the audience to create suitable atmospheres to provide “Seeking Safety” (i.e. Philosophies, structure, format, expectations, etc.).
- Assist staff in identifying potential benefits for youth and young adults and how they can apply the topics to their daily efforts.
- Participants will learn experientially via viewing an actual “Seeking Safety” group as well as participating in an actual topic session with the facilitator
