Substance use disorders are most often accompanied by a history of trauma and mental health disorders. How can we promote recovery in all areas, especially when engaging with and treating youth and young adults? This training focuses on several evidence-based best practices for treating youth with co-occurring disorders, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based treatment practices. We will explore each of these therapeutic approaches and discuss ways to apply these modalities in order to best meet the unique needs of youth and young adult clients at various levels of care (from outpatient services, including community-based and school-based programs, to more intensive treatment settings). We will also review additional evidence-based best practices, resources, and ways to integrate trauma-informed care principles into your practice, to foster resiliency and recovery for youth and young adults with co-occurring disorders.
This training is intended for professionals (clinicians, social workers, school counselors or nurses, clergy, case managers, etc.), community members, parents, and anyone seeking to support youth and young adults with co-occurring disorders. Prior knowledge is not required.
