Description
This one-hour course is intended to provide foundational knowledge of addiction. Topics include stigma, the disease model of addiction, and an overview of evidence-based treatment of substance use disorders will be provided.
This training will be held via Zoom. Individuals who are registered and attend the entire duration of the course will receive a copy of the materials at the conclusion of the training.
Intended audience
Medical providers, nurses, social workers, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADC), Certified Alcohol/Drug Counselors (CADC), Community Health Workers (CHW), recovery coaches, counselors, Licensed Mental health Counselors (LMHC), and members of the community.
Speakers
Annie Potter, MSN, MPH, NP, CARN-AP (she/her)
Annie is a clinical nurse educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance, an assistant professor of medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, and a nurse practitioner at Boston Medical Center. Annie contributes to peer-reviewed publications, evidence-based clinical guidelines, development and delivery of continuing education programs, and other resources for clinicians supporting patients with substance use disorders. Annie is also consultant and educator for the Massachusetts HEALing Communities Study, a multi-state study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. She is also the Medical Director for the Massachusetts Community Health Center ECHO and an expert faculty member of the Provider Clinical Support System Exchange (PCSS-X). Annie's other clinical interests include treatment and prevention of HIV and Hepatitis C, family planning, and care for gender-diverse individuals. Before joining Boston Medical Center, Annie practiced at a community health center in Baltimore, MD, where she established and directed the city's first walk-in HIV treatment and prevention program. She is board-certified in addictions and holds specialty certifications for the treatment of HIV and Hepatitis C. Annie earned both her Master of Nursing and Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.
Kristin Wason, MSN, NP-C, CARN (she/her)
Kristin is a clinical nurse educator for Boston Medical Center's Grayken Center for Addiction Training and Technical Assistance, an assistant professor of medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, and a nurse practitioner at Boston Medical Center. Kristin contributes to peer-reviewed publications, evidence-based clinical guidelines, development and delivery of continuing education programs, and other resources for clinicians supporting patients with substance use disorders. Kristin is the Director of the Grayken Addiction Nurse Fellowship program, the first addiction nurse fellowship of its kind in the United States. She also sits on the BMC Substance Use Disorder Nursing Council. Kristin is an expert faculty member for the Provider Clinical Support System Exchange (PCSS-X) and co-chair of the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance Use and Addiction 2022 conference. Kristin's clinical interests include women's health, low-barrier treatment, and care of persons involved within the criminal-legal system. She is board-certified in addictions through the Addiction Nursing Certification Board. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Salem State University and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of New Hampshire.
Objectives
After attending this training, participants will have the knowledge necessary to:
- Describe the prevalence of substance use disorders in the US.
- Define substance use disorders as chronic medical conditions.
- Identify at least 3 evidence-based treatment strategies for substance use disorders.
- Recognize and respond to an opioid overdose.
