Desciption: This curriculum is designed to educate and build skills about understanding secondary trauma and cumulative stress. A 2018 provider guide generated by the Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health discusses a trauma-informed approach as “...an approach to care that integrates an understanding of trauma into all levels of care, system engagement, workforce development, organizational policy and cross-sectoral collaborations.”1  This approach underlies secondary trauma and is particularly aimed at diminishing the chances of re-traumatizing people in order to encourage better coping mechanisms, positive life-decisions, and cohesive information sharing.  In the module below we focus specifically on improving the wellness and safety of service providers working with opioid-related issues, including supporting resilience and preventing secondary trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout.  Secondary Trauma identifies the duality and reciprocity inherent in the provider’s role. They are both subject to experience cumulative stress and trauma (either direct/primary or vicarious/secondary) and positioned to provide care for persons who have experienced the cumulative stress and trauma.

Learner Outcomes:

  • Distinguish between primary and secondary trauma and identify similarities in their symptoms.
  • Describe the causes, symptoms, and outcomes of cumulative stress and secondary trauma.
  • Develop and implement tools for evaluating stress within their lives.
  • Identify help resources, self-care tools, and collective care strategies for addressing cumulative stress and trauma.
