This training focuses on understanding the trends in suicidal ideation among youth and young adults, recognizing the warning signs of a suicide crisis, and learning how to respond effectively, particularly for young people who may be struggling with substance use disorder and/or in substance use treatment.
This training uses the QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) model for Suicide Prevention, an educational program designed to teach lay and professional "gatekeepers" the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to respond. We will review suicide myths and facts, discuss issues specific to suicide and substance use, and identify warning signs and suicide clues (direct, indirect, behavioral, and situational).
The training will focus on each step in the QPR model: 1. Question (ways to ask the “suicide question”, both directly and indirectly), 2. Persuade (how to persuade someone to stay alive), and 3. Refer (how to make a referral to get needed help). Information specific to youth and young adult substance use treatment programs will be provided.
