Stakeholders in the Workforce strategic planning process expressed a need for more easy ways to work together on key issues, and to know what each other are doing, so efforts are not duplicated. This website provides Workspaces, where people from different organizations can create a common online home.
How to use Workspaces
Workspaces help your working group to organize and share information beyond just relying on a series of emails. (Registration and membership approval are required.) They provide common reference points for updates, resource documents, and contact information using:
1. A public landing page describing the goals of the project and current actions, and a way to join
2. A members-only page where group members can
- Find contact information for group members
- Participate in a discussion thread
- Create and use a project-specific online resource library
- Post and collaborate on draft documents
- Update the group on meetings/activities/contacts
Each Workspace, just like each working group in everyday life, has a leader. That leader approves new members; posts occasional updates to the public-facing page for the group; and keeps an eye on the tone of conversation to be sure it is productive and no abuse or spam is occurring.
If you already have preferred resources, you can use them. For example, although many people use Google Drive (formerly Google Docs) to edit documents together, you may prefer a different resource. Just share the link on your Workspace, give your group instructions, and you can use it. Or, you may prefer to edit drafts in a wordprocessing program like Word and post them in your library, instead of using any document collaboration software at all. Other people may use different collaboration software, but want to have a public link here so people in the field can know about their project; in that case, the Workspace public-facing page contains a link to your preferred means of contact.

Key Projects Identified by Stakeholders that could use Workspaces
- Education: ensuring higher education is directly connected to the changing needs of the field both in addiction-specific programming and in other fields.
- Training: ensuring that training is relevant, accessible, and uses methods that result in long-term, consistent adoption of the trained practices
- Funding for Education: advocating for and spreading the word about grants, tuition reimbursement, tuition waiver and other means of making education in the addictions affordable
- Advocacy: linking some of the ongoing advocacy efforts
- Compensation: advocating for appropriate compensation for the field, commensurate with the training and value contributed
- Organizational Development: Coaching on organizational change and improvement
- Health Care Integration: ensuring organizations that focus on addiction are participating actively in the movement to integrated behavioral and physical health care, and that workers receive training in the skills they need
- Role of Peers: ensuring that organizations can successfully create and sustain active peer involvement in stand-alone and intetgrated addiction services.
- Data and Outcomes: collecting best practices for using data and sharing outcomes with funders, boards, staff, clients and the public
- Marketing the Field: working together to find, develop and distribute resources that successfully and consistently market the field of addiction work
