Yes

Training Description: During this workshop we will share multimedia prompts (music, videos, images) that can be used to facilitate discussions with Black youth about the intersection of trauma, race (racism) and substance use.

Hip-hop music often incorporates references to substance use in ways that at times seems to promote consumption. We will explore strategies to equip Black youth to engage popular music with a critical ear to increase their ability to make healthy lifestyle decisions regarding substance use.

Objectives: Participants will be able to...

  • Discover a toolkit of multimedia prompts to help facilitate discussion with Black youth about substance misuse prevention
  • Identify a deepened understanding of the relationship between historical traumas, systemic racism and mental health outcomes
  • Spot a deepened understanding of the relationship between mental health and substance misuse
  • Explain a deepened understanding of the relationship between racial identity for Black youth and substance use
  • Classify strategies to help Black youth increase emotional intelligence awareness and skills
  • Discover strategies to help Black youth enhance critical thinking skills to increase possibilities of making healthy decisions regarding substance use
