This is a virtual ZOOM training, the ZOOM log-in information will be sent out as we approach the training date.

Description: We will be looking at the complex interactions of tobacco use and trauma, examining how smoking affects a person with a traumatic past and what function tobacco use serves. This training will start by understanding what trauma is and how the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study has informed our knowledge. The principles of a trauma-informed treatment approach and how to apply them to tobacco dependence treatment will then be discussed. We will explore how these principles intersect with the Stages of Change model and Motivational Interviewing. This training will include breakout room exercises and small group activities. Come with your questions and curiosity, ready to be part of the conversation.

Objectives:

Upon Completion of this training, the participants will (be able to):

  • Apply the knowledge gained about the interaction of tobacco use and trauma in working with clients
  • Use a trauma-informed approach to create a safe environment with clients in which to address tobacco use
  • Be able to explain the six guiding principles and three ways to incorporate them into tobacco dependence treatment
